The Mets already stole the offseason show — and a gigantic piece from the Yankees — by landing premier free agent Juan Soto earlier this winter.
It looks all but certain now that there will be no re-Pete headlines, however, with Pete Alonso.
The Mets’ front office began implementing Plan B to move on from their homegrown slugger in recent days, as The Post’s Joel Sherman first outlined online on Thursday, and barring a severe discount offered by Alonso and agent Scott Boras, the Mets are operating as if the six-year veteran first baseman will play elsewhere in 2025.
Pete Alonso appears set to leave the Mets in free agency. API honestly thought the sides eventually would come together later in the winter — and with Steve Cohen, you shouldn’t truly rule anything out — but the stance here by Mets president David Stearns makes sense with other needs (the bullpen especially) still to fill.
