I am old enough to remember — all the way back to early last week — when New York baseball was really good.

The Mets and Yankees both won last Tuesday. They were a combined 15-6 and first-place squads making us wonder who would elbow whom out for a trip up The Canyon of Heroes.

They are a combined 0-10 since, and actually it has seemed worse than that. The Sacramento-by-way-of-Oakland-on-the-way-to-Vegas A’s came to New York for a week and made it feel like home. They won five of six, including a series finale both in The Bronx and in Flushing by the same 1-0 score.

In theory, the Yankees have the easier wake-up call, coming home to play four against the Los Angeles Angels, while the Mets had to fly cross-country to Los Angeles to play the best-in-the-world Dodgers for three games.
