Whomever the Yankees and Mets tap as their new hitting coaches, there is a good chance you will not like them. Or at least the philosophies they espouse and represent.

Since the Mets faded and the Yankees were bounced immediately from the postseason, the autopsies from large swaths of their fan bases have uncovered a lack of situational hitting. Too many strikeouts, too much swinging for the fences, too little feel for when to shorten up.

Maybe they have a point. Neither team hit well with runners on base, both hitting .238 with runners in scoring position. Mets and Yankees baserunners sported identical marks of scoring 28 percent of the time, tied for worst in baseball with the Pirates. They were not clutch.
