MOSS MAKES HIS POINTS
For 59 minutes and 34 seconds, the Jaguars accomplished their goal against the Jets last Sunday. Their mission was to not let Santana Moss beat them, and they completely shut him down while inching to a 10-6 lead.
But with 26 seconds remaining in the game, Moss finally beat the Jaguars’ defense, making a quick move to the outside and catching the game-winning 3-yard touchdown pass.
It was Moss’ 10th touchdown catch of the season, a number that not only leads the AFC and has him tied for the NFL lead, but one that puts him in some elite company in the franchise record books.
Only four other Jets and one New York Titan have eclipsed double-figures in TD receptions. Keyshawn Johnson was the last player to do it, catching 10 in 1998. Wesley Walker caught 12 in 1986, Richard Caster caught 10 in 1972, and Don Maynard caught 10 in 1968 and 14 in 1965. Art Powell caught 14 for the Titans in 1960.
“Unbelievable,” Herman Edwards said when asked about Moss. “Every time he scores a touchdown, I say, ‘Another one?’ The guy’s got 10 touchdowns. He could end up with 15. How about that?”
That would be a team record.
“The whole aura about him is different this year,” Edwards said. “He just needed to play. Once he started playing he made plays, and now everyone expects him to do it. We expect him to do it. He expects to do it.”
Edwards made Moss a starter after the team’s bye week and 0-4 start, and Moss arguably has been the best receiver in the NFL since. He has yet to complete a start without scoring a receiving TD and enters Monday night’s game against the Titans on a team-record streak of seven consecutive games with at least one TD reception.
Since being named a starter, Moss has played seven games, caught 35 passes for 570 yards (a 16.3-yard average) and scored nine TDs. That’s an average of five catches for 81.4 yards and 1.3 TDs per game.
“He’s feeling the groove,” offensive coordinator Paul Hackett said. “The guy is playing at a tempo and a level that we all had hoped. This is what you hope happens with a first-round draft choice with this kind of ability.”
Asked if he feels like he’s been in a zone, Moss said, “Yeah, you’ve got to be in the zone. It’s nothing I can describe. I always say to myself, ‘If I take care of my business, things will happen for me and good things will come.’ “
Better things surely could come to Moss out of a Monday night game because of the instant national recognition it provides. Another standout game in front of the “Monday Night Football” cameras could seal his berth into his first Pro Bowl.
Putting up big numbers won’t be easy against the Titans’ defense, particularly not against top Tennessee CB Samari Rolle, whom Moss actually grew up with in the Carroll Gardens section of Miami.
“I don’t think about what’s going to happen before the game,” Moss said. “Monday night’s going to be special, because it’s a game I’ve always watched. Everyone wants to play big in every game, but in this type of game you’ve got to try to hold your ground and not try to do too much. Just be you; be yourself.”
