In an era of expansion in North American sports, the NBA might be the next major league to join the trend.
The NBA is mulling potential expansion, and commissioner Adam Silver said this week that a decision on whether the league will add as many as two teams will be made in 2026.
Speculation about NBA expansion has been lingering ever since Silver acknowledged the possibility ahead of the 2020-21 season. Silver said he’s actively gauging the interest of league stakeholders to get an idea on where they stand on the issue.
But Silver’s comments Tuesday ahead of the Knicks winning this year’s NBA Cup offered clarity on when fans, owners and players will know whether the league will balloon beyond 30 teams in the near future.
