Byron Scott likes Charlie Ward’s “edge.” But the Net coach may have to get in line with a bigger check to obtain the services of the ex-Knick point guard.

While Ward’s agent, Craig McKenzie, maintained that “New Jersey is obviously a viable option because Charlie doesn’t have to move” [from the metropolitan area], sources said Ward, who was waived by the Suns on Tuesday, is seeking a two- or three-year deal and that might send him to the Rockets or Spurs.

Sources also maintained the Knicks are heavily in the mix.

The Texas teams don’t have money beyond the minimum but can offer years the Nets would not. McKenzie said he has been contacted by 10 teams.

“The guy has experience and can make shots,” Scott said, speaking of Ward in general terms.

“I like his defense. He has a little edge to him. He doesn’t give an inch, he is another guy who doesn’t back down. I don’t care how big you are. He is a feisty little guy. I like that about him.”

While there is mutual interest on both sides, Scott admitted an undeniable fact yesterday. Money ultimately wields the most influence.

“As a veteran player in the latter stages of your career, the one thing you want to try to do is get as much money as you can,” Scott said. “Then if the team is a good fit, that helps. Most guys are trying to get either added years or more cash. He is going to check out his options and see what’s best for him.”
