The victorious march of New York-breds in graded stakes at Aqueduct this winter, which includes Theresa The Teacha in the Affectionately and Biogio’s Rose in the Rare Treat, continued yesterday when Not So Fast outgamed Tarquinius down the stretch to win the Grade 3, $75,000 Stymie Handicap by a neck.

Not So Fast, a 6-year-old son of Double Negative, had been claimed three times in his last 11 starts, most recently for $35,000 last July by trainer Bruce Levine. Laid off soon after that for nearly four months, Not So Fast returned wearing front bandages but has won four of his last five starts, including three straight over the Big A’s inner dirt track.

Well off the pace in the early going under Octavio Vergara, Not So Fast kicked into gear leaving the backside and raced into contention four wide on the turn.

Tarquinius, checked sharply by jockey Joe Bravo nearing the far turn while in tight along the rail, circled even wider and looked like a winner turning for home. But Not So Fast dug in, surged to the front and held Tarquinius safe in a long stretch drive.

“The race didn’t set up as I expected at all,” Levine said. “I figured he’d be laying a close second. I wasn’t thrilled with where he was.”

Not So Fast ran the 11/8 miles in 1:49 to pay $17.20, keying a $64 exacta.

“I have to give a lot of credit to Bruce,” Vergara said. “He had this horse 100 percent ready. Horses like this are hard to find. He came from the bottom, now he’s on the top. I wish I could ride more like him.”

The favored entry of Parental Pressure and Salty Note, who were running 1-2 after the first half-mile, faded to finish fourth and sixth. Billy Haggard, who finished seventh, was vanned off after the race, but track veterinarian Dr. Neil Cleary said there was no apparent injury.
