The Rev. Jesse Jackson’s PUSH troops and angry women’s groups will be far from the putting green today as the embattled Masters tournament goes into its second day.
About 100 demonstrators were expected to protest Augusta National’s all-male membership policy from a spot half a mile away from the action.
Jackson this week joined Martha Burk, head of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, to call on Augusta National members who oppose the club’s all-male membership to resign.
“We’ll be at the designated locations the sheriff has approved,” said Janis Mathis, vice president of Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.
“It will be an orderly, peaceful protest.”
Mathis said the local sheriff had forbidden protesters from coming any closer.
“Unfortunately, we’re not allowed on the links,” she said.
Club chairman Hootie Johnson said this week his club had no timetable for admitting a woman member and that the policy was backed by all club members.
