Pete Alonso is already making a big positive impression in Orioles camp, bringing a veteran presence and extra fire, Orioles people say.
Team owner David Rubenstein likened their Alonso acquisition to the all-time deal for Frank Robinson 60 years ago, and though that might be an exaggeration, Alonso is being seen as the key to the Orioles’ potential resurgence.
The Mets never were going to go more than three years for Alonso. Mets honcho David Stearns’ suggestion at the GM meetings that he was “all in” for Alonso apparently reflected their expectation no one else might beat three years, either.
The Mets seriously considered taking Trey Yesavage before selecting Carson Benge in that stacked 2019 draft. Benge looks like a fine pick (obviously, so was Yesavage).
