Even if the Yankees and Devil Rays get two games in today, there will be one game remaining to be played between the teams this season.
Rain washed out yesterday’s doubleheader and threatens today’s 3:05 twinbill at Yankee Stadium.
And, according to Yankee GM Brian Cashman, commissioner Bud Selig strongly wants any games remaining after today to be made up in the confines of the regular season. That would mean if the teams don’t have a common day off, the Yankees would host the Devil Rays in the afternoon and play another team at night.
“Sandy Alderson was on site today and he reiterated the commissioner’s desire to get all the games done during the season,” Cashman said of MLB’s executive vice president of baseball operations who, with the umpiring crew, called off yesterday’s doubleheader. “They are looking for options in season.”
Because Selig doesn’t want teams making up games on Oct. 4 – the day after the final regular season game which is usually kept open in case a one-game playoff is needed – the tension between the Yankees and MLB didn’t die.
“We want to push it off to the end of the season and play it if necessary,” Cashman said. “But we need to get these games played.”
Since the Yankees and Devil Rays don’t have a common day off, the most likely date is Sept. 23 when the Devil Rays are off and the Yankees host the Royals at 7:05 p.m.
A precedent was set for that weird happening in 2000 when the Indians beat the White Sox and lost to the Twins at home.
Esteban Loaiza, slated to start yesterday’s Game 1, will be in the bullpen today when Mike Mussina starts the first game and 23-year-old Brad Halsey goes in the nightcap.
“They want to go with the young guy and see if he gets hit, then I will be in the game and see what happens,” Loaiza said.
