ROBBY RIPS ‘GUTLESS’ LEAFS
OVERTIME Devils 1 Leafs 1
TORONTO – Two nights of Tie Domi and turtling was too much to stand, so Larry Robinson fairly spat what he felt about the Maple Leafs.
“They turtle every time. That’s not tough, that’s gutless,” the Devil coach snarled, his face reddening. “We stood up to everything they had. They punch after the whistle, stab you in the back of the legs. They talk abbout Scott Stevens being one of the dirtiest players. Well, they grab guys like Sergei Brylin around the face. That’s really tough.”
All pretense of mutual respect vanished last night as the Rematch for Revenge turned nasty. The Maple Leafs and Devils stopped disliking and started despising each other.
Last night’s fight-filled 1-1 tie here was the outgrowth of Domi’s Elbow of Infamy on Scott Niedermayer back on May 3. While Domi was no angel last night, the rest of the opponents found their own reasons to battle.
Even Devil leading scorer Patrik Elias engaged in fisticuffs against Wade Belak, and linemate Jason Arnott was ejected for jumping in that late scrap.
“Don’t be running after the best players,” Robinson said. “That’s goon hockey. That went out with [disco].”
In all, the overmatched refs
doled out 134 minutes in penalties in the endless game.
“Certain things happen only in Toronto. Only in Toronto, boy,” Bobby Holik chortled in bemusement.
Robinson tried to stop his tirade, but the pause only served to gather his breath.
“It upsets me big time,” Robinson said. “For a tough team, they lead the league in dives. If you’re going to play tough, play tough all the time. Stand up to it. That’s the way I was taught.”
Domi had his effect on the game, drawing the penalty that led to Toronto’s goal by Mats Sundin. John Madden answered in the third as the Devils improved to 8-1-1 in their last 10.
For the second straight night, Domi made his mark by taking rather than receiving. He drew a seven-minute power play by turtling Friday that led to Toronto’s second goal and last night drew the power play that led to the first goal of the game.
Brylin clonked Domi in the helmet with his stick after both reached for a puck at center ice, and Mats Sundin capitalized to put the Leafs in front at 17:55 of
the second. Sundin blew around White on the left wall and his off-wing wrister beat Martin Brodeur on the long side for his seventh.
Again, the Devils appeared headed for defeat when they revived late. Bobby Holik was supposed to dump the puck and change, but stayed on when his shot on Curtis Joseph rebounded into the slot. Randy McKay and Madden came on as part of the change and the line mounted pressure. Finally, Holik’s left point shot was stopped by Madden in front and Madden shot under Joseph’s glove for his third with 11:01 left in regulation.
Brodeur robbed Domi’s bid for hometown heroics with 7:57 left, reaching down to glove Domi’s point-blank one-timer from the left flat.
