‘ROBIN’ TAKES PETER PAN
No, that wasn’t Funny Cide sloshing through the slop yesterday at Belmont Park for a six-length victory in the Grade 2, $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes. But he and the longshot Peter Pan winner, Go Rockin’ Robin, are blood brothers.
Both 3-year-olds are New York-bred sons of the sire Distorted Humor, both were born within weeks of each other at the McMahon Thoroughbreds farm outside Saratoga Springs, and both kicked the teeth out of open company in graded stakes events.
Ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, Go Rockin’ Robin sat well back off the hot pace (:22.3, :44.4) contested by Alysweep and Christine’s Outlaw, cruised up on the outside around the turn, collared Alysweep at the top of the stretch and drew off, completing the mile-and-an-eighth in a solid 1:48.2 to pay $28.
Alysweep held for second to complete a $104 exacta, with Supervisor third. Nacheezmo, the 6-5 favorite, was never a factor after an awful getaway and finished fifth of sixth.
The Peter Pan is this track’s key prep for the June 7 Belmont Stakes, but since Go Rockin’ Robin is not nominated to the Triple Crown, it would cost a $100,000 supplementary fee to challenge Funny Cide in the “Test of the Champion.”
“The Belmont is a possibility,” trainer Scott Schwartz said. “He can definitely get the mile-and-a-half. We’ll think about it.”
