With great performance comes great reward. Except for the Nets, who were ignored on every major NBA honor last season.

But maybe things are starting to change.

Yesterday, the league announced that Byron Scott and Jason Kidd had earned Coach and Player of the Month honors, respectively. It’s the first such prize for Scott and the third for Kidd, but the first for him since November 2001.

Scott guided the Nets to a 12-3 record in December, setting franchise marks for wins in a month and home wins in a month (11). The club also had the league’s top defense for December (88.1 ppg) and led the NBA in point differential (12.8 per game).

As for Kidd, he racked up 20.0 points, 9.1 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals in the 31-day span. Just to put into perspective the kind of mesmerizing year Kidd is having, those numbers, aside from the assists, are all lower than his averages for the season.

Kenyon Martin has seen his offense flourish of late, pouring in 22.3 ppg in the last four games on 58 percent shooting. Part of the reason is increased touches in the post. But the other factor?

“Shot selection,” Martin said.
