The Yankees had a choice to make when it came to acquiring a third baseman.
Would they meet the Diamondbacks’ steep asking price to go for the bat of Eugenio Suárez, a free agent following this season, or take on Colorado’s Ryan McMahon for a more modest prospect haul, but with much less offense, a better glove and two more years on his contract?
On Friday, they made their choice and McMahon is a Yankee.
Several scouts praised the Yankees for the deal that brought the 30–year-old, lefty-swinging, Gold Glover to The Bronx in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects.
