Not only is David Cone making his much-anticipated comeback to Shea Stadium tonight, but his famous legion of followers will be there as well.

That’s right: it’s the return of the Coneheads.

“We’re dusting them off,” said Andrew Levy, leader of the group.

The Coneheads, who were a scene-setting presence in nearly every one of Cone’s home starts at Shea from 1988-92, will be back for the first time since the righty was dealt from the Mets to Toronto on August 27, 1992, Levy confirmed last night.

The group began back in 1988, when a few alumni of Lehigh University were looking for something to rival Dwight Gooden’s “K Korner.” Levy and his buddies came up with the “Cone Con’er,” and used traffic pylons instead of Ks for each Cone strikeout. The group sat in the left-field upper deck.

Eventually, the group of seven grew to about 50. Levy said there might be that many Coneheads present for the Mets-Expos game.
