Undefeated Sky Mesa, one of three powerhouse 2-year-olds of 2002 along with Vindication and Toccet sidelined so far this year because of injury, becomes the first of the trio to return to action when he makes his 3-year-old debut in today’s Grade 2, $150,000 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park.

Trained by John Ward, Sky Mesa (by Pulpit) was 3-for-3 at 2, including victories in the Hopeful at Saratoga and Breeders Futurity at Keeneland. He was the morning-line favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but wrenched an ankle a few days before the race, suffered another setback when he bruised his foot last spring, and hasn’t run since.
