OLYMPICS: Swimmer tests positive
Swimmer Jessica Hardy‘s trip to the Beijing Olympics could be in jeopardy after she tested positive for a banned substance during the recent U.S. trials. Hardy, 21, earned spots on her first Olympic team in her best event, the 100-meter breaststroke, and the 50 freestyle and 400 free relay.
* The U.S. Olympic Committee will send 596 athletes to the Beijing Games, according to a list the federation released Tuesday night. U.S. athletes will compete in 30 sports, including the newest disciplines – motocross, open water swimming and women’s steeplechase.
TOUR de FRANCE: Sastre grabs lead
Carlos Sastre of Spain took the yellow jersey by winning the 17th stage of the Tour de France yesterday. Samuel Sanchez of Spain was second and Andy Schleck of Luxembourg was third. Both were 2 minutes, 3 seconds behind. Sastre leads Franck Schleck, the overnight leader, by 1 minute, 24 seconds. Bernhard Kohl of Austria is third at 1:33.
TENNIS: Federer flops in Toronto
World number one Roger Federer lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Frenchman Gilles Simon in his opening match at the Toronto Masters last night in Toronto. Second-seeded Rafael Nadal advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jesse Levine.
BASEBALL: Manny may miss Yanks
Manny Ramirez was out of Boston’s lineup yesterday in Seattle with a sore knee. Asked if he’ll be back for tomorrow’s opener against the Yankees, Ramirez said, “I don’t know. I’m day to day at this point.”
* David Ortiz, expected to rejoin the Red Sox tomorrow, admitted he hasn’t completely recovered from a wrist injury. In six rehab games, he went 5-for-18 with three homers and six RBIs. “I’m not going to lie to you,” he said. “I’m not 100 percent, but I’m close to it.”
NFL: Goodell watching Favre rift
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is monitoring the ongoing rift between the Packers and Brett Favre. Goodell reportedly has spoken with Packers management several times recently as tensions mounted between the three-time MVP and his team.
