GRID: Panthers’ Smith sent home after fight
In Spartanburg, S.C., Panthers receiver Steve Smith was sent home from training camp yesterday after he punched teammate Ken Lucas at practice, leaving the starting cornerback holding an ice pack to his left eye before he was carted to the locker room.
The Panthers didn’t provide an update on the extent of Lucas’ injuries and club officials declined to say if the volatile Smith, the team’s top receiver, would be suspended.
* Army football coach Stan Brock, 50, said in a statement that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer during a routine physical in July and underwent successful surgery Tuesday at Orange Regional Medical Center.
MLB: Garciaparra placed on DL
The Dodgers made room for Manny Ramirez on the active roster by placing infielder Nomar Garciaparra on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
BLOTTER: ‘Pacman’ Jones case
In Las Vegas, a man identified by NFL player Adam “Pacman“ Jones as the gunman in a strip club shooting that wounded three people in 2007 was indicted on seven felony counts, including three counts of attempted murder.
Arvin Kenti Edwards of Renton, Wash., was ordered by a Las Vegas judge to be held without bail pending arraignment Tuesday. Lawyer Jeffrey Segal said outside court his client will plead not guilty to the charges.
* In Winston-Salem, N.C., Mavericks forward Josh Howard was arrested in his hometown after police said he was drag racing, going 94 mph in a 55-mph zone. He was charged with careless and reckless driving, and speed competition. He has been released from the Forsyth County jail on a written promise to appear in court Sept. 23.
GOLF: Wie misses cut
In Reno, Nev., Michelle Wie failed in her eighth attempt to make the cut on the PGA Tour, shooting a second-round 80 at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open. Parker McLachlin took the lead into the clubhouse at 14-under par.
* In Akron, Ohio, in the final World Golf Championship of the season, Vijay Singh shot a second-round 4-under 66 at the Firestone course at the Bridgestone Invitational to take a one-shot over Phil Mickelson, who also shot a 66.
* In Sunningdale, England, Yuri Fudoh and Ji-Yai Shin shot a 4-under 68 to lead by one stroke at the Women’s British Open, while Annika Sorenstam‘s shot a 72 and barely made the cut. Fudoh and Shin were at 10-under 134.
