Try finding anyone who had a more productive summer than Chris McRae.

The 6-foot-4 guard/forward was an important, yet unheralded part of St. Raymond’s CHSAA championship team last year. At camps during the past few months, however, McRae displayed the skills necessary to be a sought after recruit. That paid off Monday night when he verbally committed to Hofstra.

“He exploded this summer,” Ravens head coach Gary DeCesare said. “He proved that he was one of the top players in the city.”

Which is something he has had a hard time doing at St. Raymond’s, where his role and the team’s depth made it difficult for McRae to make a name for himself.

“He’s forced to play inside for us,” DeCesare said of McRae, who averaged 10 points and five rebounds a game last season for the 27-3 Ravens. “But he is a multi-dimensional player. He’s got ball-handling skills and he can shoot.”

Plenty of schools took note. McRae chose Hofstra over Rutgers, Providence, East Carolina, George Washington and St. Bonaventure.

“I was sure my time would come,” said McRae, who lives in The Bronx. “I knew I had to shine during the summer and I took advantage of that.”

Which he hopes to continue to do for Hofstra, a team that made the NCAA tournament last season for the first time in 23 years. That squad was led by Christ the King-alum, Speedy Claxton.

“I think we’re kind of in the same boat,” McRae said of himself and Claxton, who was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft in June by Philadelphia. “We weren’t really thought that much of going into college, but we have a nice background in high school.”

McRae’s more highly-touted teammate, Julius Hodge, will soon be visiting his four remaining choices: Maryland, Florida, North Carolina State and Syracuse.

DeCesare is running the Powerhouse Coaches Clinic Saturday at Hofstra. Among the speakers will be Jay Wright of Hofstra, Bob Hill of Fordham and Bobby Gonzalez of Manhattan. For more information, call DeCesare at 718-824-5050 ext. 916.
