‘STORM’ BREWING IN CAPPY
The day after one longtime NYRA track announcer, John “Johnny I” Imbriale, called his final race at the Big A, the $75,000 feature today at Aqueduct is named after another legendary New York race caller, the Fred “Cappy” Capossela Stakes, a six-furlong dash for 3-year-olds.
Attila’s Storm, breaking from outside post No. 6 under leading rider Rafael Bejarano, looms a heavy favorite after earning Beyer Speed Figures of 98 and 97 in his first two starts, both at Santa Anita, that tower above his competition. Two starts back, Attila’s Storm was beaten 21/4 lengths by Going Wild, one of trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ top Kentucky Derby contenders, in a race run in a sizzling 1:08.3.
If Attila’s Storm, now trained by John DeStefano after being saddled by Hall of Famer Ron McAnally his first two starts, runs back to that effort, he should crush the locals. His main obstacle is the fact the son of Forest Wildcat is still a maiden, and four of his five opponents already have won two races. Since shipping east following his last start (Jan. 15), when he ran second but was disqualified to sixth, Attila’s Storm has turned in two lackadaisical five-furlong workouts in 1:02.3 and 1:03.3.
“He doesn’t work very fast,” DeStefano said. “He plays around a lot, but he’s the kind of horse that shows up in the afternoon.”
Benjamin Baby, coming off a 71/2-length blowout in a Feb. 4 sprint at Aqueduct, also is a threat. Rich Migliore rides for Kiaran McLaughlin.
Summerland, trained by Rick Violette and ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, should be tough after scratching out of an allowance race here yesterday. The New York-bred colt has won two of his four starts by daylight margins and has placed in a pair of stakes. He gets blinkers on for the Cappy.

NYRA announced yesterday that racing will switch back to the main track from the inner dirt on March 16, a week later than planned.
“This is a transitional period for weather here, and it is always best to take a cautious approach,” new track superintendent John Passero said.
