Superteams in the NFL don’t work. The 2011 Eagles, with a free-agent bonanza that included Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie – a team that backup quarterback Vince Young called a “dream team” – became a cautionary tale. This is not how you build your team.

You invest in draft picks. You identify the young quarterback who grows with the team. You lose a lot for a few seasons and sell the future and the culture to your fan base.

The Rams broke every rule, and on Sunday they were handsomely rewarded for being the one team in football that thinks differently. “Trying to win now” might be the latest market inefficiency, and the Rams exploited it.
