Back in May, I devoted the top of a Slap Shots column to chastising the Bruins for not having retired Frankie Brimsek’s No. 1. It didn’t make any sense that the Original Six B’s hadn’t honored one of the NHL’s greatest goaltenders, especially because the franchise had recognized pre-World War II legends Eddie Shore, Lionel Hitchman and Dit Clapper by raising the numbers 2, 3 and 5, respectively, to the Boston Garden rafters.

But as I was reading the column the next day a few hundred times to add to the click count (I’m joking, only perused it once), it struck me that I’d never advocated for the Rangers to honor their legendary founding fathers by retiring their numbers.

Not only that, but I suggested that instead of commemorating Bill Cook’s No. 5, Frank Boucher’s No. 7 and Bryan Hextall Sr.’s No. 12, the Rangers should create a franchise Hall of Fame and induct the trio as charter members.
