There are few things that inspire angst and regret in quite the same way an interrupted sports career does. This has been a weeklong celebration of David Wright, and a worthy one, but one of the unfair truths of such a jubilee is what lurks in the background: 

The foul whiff of “What if?” 

He isn’t alone in New York, of course. Here’s my list of 10 what-ifs that can haunt you as a fan as little or as much as you like. To clarify: These are careers (besides Wright’s) that were ended or permanently altered far too soon, as opposed to strategic or transitional what-ifs (such as, picking a name at random, Pete Crow-Armstrong).
