THEY’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
The Hurricanes are the Devils’ most familiar foe the past five seasons, meeting three times in 12 series. Important things happen when Jersey faces the ‘Canes. So far, somebody goes to the finals, the Devils in 2001, Carolina in 2002. This one will be tight and tough:
FORWARDS
Quality abound, with Patrik Elias staking his claim as one of the best, Brian Gionta returning to the scene of his first two playoff goals, and Scott Gomez a full-fledged No. 1 center. The ‘Canes have ridden Eric Staal.
Two of the best two-way centers, John Madden and Rod Brind’Amour, will ensure a close-checking series.

DEFENSE
New Jersey’s backline was superb against the Rangers, but Carolina is different. Brian Rafalski was brave in his own end, and can expect even more attempts to paste him on the boards. Carolina relies on vets Aaron Ward, Bret Hedican and Glen Wesley, while ex-Devil Mike Commodore has become reliable.

GOALTENDING
Cam Ward allowed only four goals in two (1-1) games against New Jersey this season.
Martin Brodeur was sharp against the Rangers, giving up only four goals in four games.

COACHING
Peter Laviolette’s efforts at line-matching won’t matter if his team gives New Jersey many power plays, and the Devils don’t have as much to worry about checking-wise as they did against Jaromir Jagr.
Lou Lamoriello now has two scoring lines, so he can expect to dictate who’s on the ice despite lacking home ice.
EDGE: Devils
Prediction: Devils in six.
