When Victor Wembanyama learned that one of his security guards slapped Britney Spears, he thought he was being pranked.

Spears, 41, was reportedly slapped by the security guard when she was trying to get a photo with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft at Catch restaurant in the ARIA Hotel in Las Vegas.

“What happened last night, is, I saw the news obviously, I woke up to a couple phone calls — something did happen when I was walking with some security from the team to the restaurant. We were in the hall. There was a lot of people,” Wembanyama said told reporters Thursday at NBA Summer League in Vegas.

“There was one person who was calling me, but security told me I couldn’t stop because it would have made a crowd. That person grabbed me from behind. I didn’t see what happened because I was walking straight and didn’t stop, and that person grabbed me from behind, so I just let security push her away. I don’t know with how much force, though.

“Security pushed her away, and I didn’t stop to look. I kept walking and enjoyed a nice dinner.”

He was asked if he realized at the time that it was Spears.

“Actually, I didn’t know for a couple hours,” Wembanyama answered.

“When I got back to the hotel, I didn’t forget about this, but I thought it was no big deal. And then [I was told] this was Britney Spears. At first, I was like, ‘No, you’re joking!’ But yeah, it turns out it was Britney Spears.

“I never saw her face.”

According to TMZ, it was Damian Smith, the Spurs’ head of security, who slapped Spears.

After the incident, Spears reportedly “composed herself” as the security guard apologized and told her, “You understand how it is when you’re being swarmed by fans.”

Spears was said to have accepted the apology — though she told a different version of the incident in an Instagram Story post in Thursday evening.

“Traumatic experiences are not new to me and I have had my fair share of them,” she wrote. “I was not prepared for what happened to me last night. I recognized an athlete in my hotel lobby as I was heading to dinner. I later went to a restaurant at a different hotel and saw him again. I decided to approach him and congratulate him on his success. It was really loud, so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. I am away of the players [sic] statement where her mentions ‘I grabbed him from behind’ but I simply tapped him on the shoulder. His security then back handed me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd. Nearly knocking me down and causing my glasses off my face.

“I get swarmed by people all the time. In fact, that night. I was swarmed by a group of at least 20 fans. My security team didn’t hit any of them.”
