Weak 17
Thereâs a reason most respectable fantasy league hold their championship in Week 16 â because thereâs no telling on draft day which starters will be sitting out come the last week of the season.
Just like several key components of the dynamic Colts offense were nowhere to be found in the final week of the regular season, expect much of the same from several teams this year â like the Patriots, Saints, Bears and Seahawks.
These teams cannot improve their playoff position, or in New Englandâs case, arenât too concerned about moving from a four-seed to a No. 3 since it would not grant them a bye.
For some of you, this might effect your Week 17 starting lineup. If so, look for a new league next year that doesnât include the final weak week of the season. In the meantime, if youâre forced to participate in this haphazard, unpredictable, unfair, illegitimate, indiscriminate, irregular, random, slipshod, accidental, arbitrary final weekend, you might as well start the right guys. Hereâs a look:
Saturday
Giants at Redskins â Big Blue needs a win to vastly improve their playoff chances. But having lost six of seven and missing Jeremy Shockey, they arenât exactly on an upswing. Expect the Skins to play them tough, forcing the Giants to score some points. Catch is, the Skins defense has played much better the last month or so. Having given QB coach Kevin Gilbride play-calling duties, the Giants offense is likely to have a limited set of plays â those which Eli Manning is most comfortable with.
With a defense that is still black and blue, and without Michael Strahan, an otherwise ineffective Redskins offense will likely show some life.
Good week: Eli Manning, Plaxico Burress, Tiki Barber, Ladell Betts, Santana Moss
Sunday
Steelers at Bengals â Pittsburgh has nothing to play for, and the Bengals have very little, though they still cling to slim playoff hopes. Plus, Cincy faces the monumental task of trying to bounce back from last weekâs crushing defeat at Denver. This one could end up being a Pittsburgh blowout.
Good week: Willie Parker, Hines Ward, Carson Palmer
Down week: Rudi Johnson, Chad Johnson
Raiders at Jets â With a chance to clinch a playoff berth, the Jets will be fired up. The Raiders have been dead for a while, but no one has told their defense.
Good week: Cedric Houston, Leon Washington, Justin Vargas
Bad week: Chad Pennington, Laveraneus Coles
Seahawks at Buccaneers â Hawks are set as the No. 4 seed in the East. Bucs are resigned to a disappointing season. Donât expect to see a whole lot of Matt Hasselbeck or Shaun Alexander.A game with no reason for being played, there is even less reason to watch.
Good week: Maurice Morris, Senaca Wallace, Brad Gradkowski, Joey Galloway
Down week: Deion Branch
Bad week: Matt Hasselbeck, Shaun Alexander
Browns at Texans â If you thought the Hawks-Bucs was useless, wait to you get a load of this matchup. Ken Dorsey will start at QB for the Browns.
Good week: Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, Ron Dayne, Andre Johnson
Lions at Cowboys â Cowboys are in the playoffs, but could still win the division â the difference being playing at home or on the road next week. Thatâs enough to keep Dallas interested, and a little interest is enough to pound the Lions.
Good week: Marion Barber, Terrell Owens, Terry Glenn, Jon Kitna, Roy Williams
Bad week: Arlen Harris, Julius Jones
Rams at Vikings â Somehow, the Rams are still alive for a playoff spot. A lot has to happen, starting with a win in Minnesota. It might end there, too. Vikings have phenomenal run-stopping unit. Rams arenât near as explosive as the former Greatest Show on Turf. But as good as the Vikes are vs. the run, theyâre equally as bad vs. the pass (and are without Fred Smoot).
Good week: Chester Taylor, Travis Taylor, Torry Holt, Marc Bulger
Down week: Steven Jackson
Bad week: Tarvaris Jackson
Jaguars at Chiefs â The winner has a sliver of hope, the loser is out. In reality, the winner likely is out, too. But itâs enough to keep the teams playing to win.
Good week: Maurice Jones-Drew
Down week: Larry Johnson
Bad week: Trent Green
Panthers at Saints â Saints, win or lose, are the NFC No. 2 seed, so thereâs no reason for them to risk injury to their starters. Carolina still has an outside shot at the postseason with a win. Jake Delhomme returns for the Cats.
Good week: Steve Smith, Jake Delhomme, DeAngelo Williams, Marques Colston
Down week: Deuce McAllister
Bad week: Reggie Bush, Drew Brees
Patriots at Titans â Some key Pats could see limited action â namely Tom Brady and Corey Dillon.
Good week: Laurence Maroney, Travis Henry
Down week: Vince Young
Bad week: Tom Brady, Corey Dillon
Dolphins at Colts â You would think the Colts would keep their talent in the game in hopes of snapping out of their current funk before the playoffs. But you never know with Tony Dungy. Regardless, they still canât stop the run.
Good week: Ronnie Brown, Joseph Addai
Down week: Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne
Cardinals at Chargers â Chargers need a win to secure home-field advantage. The Cardinals, well, theyâre the Cardinals.
Great week: LaDainian Tomlinson
Good week: Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin
Bad week: Philip Rivers
Falcons at Eagles â Eagles take the NFC East title with a win. Falcons look dead in the water (how do you lose a game in which the opposing team throws the ball only seven times, like the Panthers did last week in Atlanta?).
Good week: Brian Westbrook, Jeff Garcia, Donteâ Stallworth, Warrick Dunn
Bad week: Michael Vick
Bill at Ravens â Ravens need a win to secure a first-round bye, and possibly grab home-field advantage. The Bills are much improved, but do you trust J. P. Losman vs. the Ravensâ defense? Actually, Willis McGahee has a tougher assignment. Losman might do OK.
Good week: Steve McNair, J.P. Losman
Bad week: Willis McGahee
49ers at Broncos â Broncos need a win to clinch a playoff spot. 49ers were surprisingly mediocre this year, but this isnât the time or place for an upset.
Good week: Jay Cutler, Javon Walker, Tatum Bell, Frank Gore
Bad week: Alex Smith
Packers at Bears â Bearsâ defense has looked suspect of late. But expect a statement game to end the season, even though they have nothing to play for. Brian Griese is expected to get some playing time at QB.
Good week: Brian Griese, Thomas Jones
Bad week: Rex Grossman, Brett Favre
