PORT ST. LUCIE — A couple things might surprise you about Juan Soto, the Mets’ new all-time hitting savant who was rifling liners all over the main field at Clover Park on Day 1 here.

One is that he told folks he was nervous for his first official day in orange and blue.

And two, not even he figured he’d get anywhere near that $765 million deal he did get.

On the first score, if he had nerves, and he admitted to me he did, they didn’t show. He was spraying shots everywhere, punctuating a well-covered batting session that separated him from all the others with a bomb into the Garber Buick pavilion in right field.
