WIN MASKS BIG BLUE PROBLEMS
QUARTERBACKS: C
Best thing Kent Graham (15 of 21, 183 yards) did was spot Tiki Barber alone for a dump-off that produced biggest play of night. This is safety-first at its best/worst. It’s in Graham’s head that he can’t throw interceptions and as a result he seems to be hesitant and taking too many (five) sacks. Needs to play with more abandon.
RUNNING BACKS: C
Thank goodness for Barber. Otherwise, nothing doing for Gary Brown (10-23) or Charles Way (3-7), who went down with a sprained knee.
WIDE RECEIVERS: C
Amani Toomer (5-44) is getting plenty of catches but needs to be more of a scoring threat. Ike Hilliard (2-41) was not a frequent target and Joe Jurevicius (1-11) got his only reception on the game-winning drive.
TIGHT ENDS: C
The best thing about the no-huddle offense is it keeps Pete Mitchell (2-14) on the field.
OFFENSIVE LINE: D
Penalties abound, run blocking (30-75) was suspect and pass-blocking was not good. What else is there?
DEFENSIVE LINE: A
Robert Harris blew by RG Everett McIver on first series and nearly took Troy Aikman’s head off on a sack. Michael Strahan also got Aikman once and there was good pressure all night.
LINEBACKERS: A
We’ve come to expect this of Jessie Armstead (10 tackles), who made life miserable for Emmitt Smith (22-26).
SECONDARY: B
Speedy Raghib Ismail (4-74) did not get anything deep and the damage done by Ernie Mills (6-76) was manageable.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B
Barber deserves an A all by himself for his stunning 85-yard punt return, which gave Giants a spark and their only TD.
KICKING GAME: C
Brad Daluiso nailed his two FG attempts, including 21-yarder with one-second remaining. He did not do a good job on ensuing bloop kickoff but shouldn’t have been put in that situation, which also resulted in his season-ending knee injury. Brad Maynard (35.6-yard average) kept the ball out of Deion’s hands.
COACHING: D
A Monday Night Football victory over the Cowboys is historic stuff, but Jim Fassel did not have a good night. His offense tried a no-huddle but it was mostly just quicker slop. And he allowed one of the most ridiculous plays you’ll ever see, signing off on a bloop kickoff (after conferring with special teams coach Larry MacDuff) rather than a squib. It was overthinking of the worst kind. Had the Giants lost, heads would have rolled.
