Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Woodward will be televised live by ESPN2 during its telecast from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m. Post time for the Woodward, the eighth race of a 10-race live card, is 4:40.

On track, fans will receive a free T-shirt with each paid admission, while supplies last. After the races, there will be a benefit at the Marquee Tent in the backyard for former Post handicapper Rick Lang. Tickets are $100, which includes food, beer, wine and live music. Make your check payable to Jockey Club Foundation.

Julio Pezua was suspended 10 days for careless riding aboard Tony and Shaye during the running of the second race on Sept. 10. Having appealed, a stay is granted.

1ST RACE – Overnight rains made the track muddy and all turf races yesterday and today were switched to the main track. The field raced down the backstretch and everyone was avoiding the rail. Brave One was racing in the 3 or 4 path while inside of pacesetting Gunning. He took the lead on the far turn and then started to bear out. Jovial Dancer, who was wide throughout, was forced wider turning for home by Brave One. In the stretch, Brave One edged away for the victory while Jovial Dancer finished a tiring second. Jovial Dancer has now finished in the money in 13 of his 14 career starts, but only has one win.

4TH RACE – Track condition was switched to good for this race. U So Fine set the pace while racing extremely wide from the rail. She edged away on the far turn and was comfortably in front the rest of the race. Album was bothered at the start by Northern Energy, who bore in badly. Album then rated off the pace while saving ground and got up in the stretch to finish second. Northern Energy pressed the pace while wide and tired in the stretch to be third.

5TH RACE – Bella Rouge pressed the pace while racing on the rail and took over the lead nearing the top of the stretch. She angled out slightly turning for home and held off My Lady Avie in the stretch for the victory. It was the first winner of the day to have raced close to the rail. It was also the first victory in the U.S. for 19-year-old apprentice jockey Julian Pimentel. He had broken his riding maiden on Dec. 26 of last year in Colombia, but he still received the customary treatment of breaking his riding maiden. He received a shower of eggs, shaving cream, talcum powder, etc., in the jocks room.

8TH RACE – Favored Quiet Mike stumbled at the start but he raced in his customary position far from the early pace. He started his move on the far turn and was full of run turning for home. He tried to bear in slightly and Mike Smith had to angle him back outside for clear running room. He had too much ground to make up and couldn’t catch Open Sesame for the victory. Fajardo rated off the pace and looked to be in perfect striking position nearing the stretch, but he tired in the stretch and fell back to third.
