Get ready for Round 3.
Riding the strength of Giancarlo Stanton’s first-inning, three-run home run and Aaron Judge’s second-inning solo shot, the Yankees eliminated the Guardians with a 5-1 victory in Game 5 of the ALDS to advance to their third ALCS matchup with the Astros in the past six years.
Roughly 24 hours after the Yankees bullpen completed its fourth shutout inning — following five innings of one-run ball thrown by Nestor Cortes — the Yankees will open their next series Wednesday night (7:37 p.m., TBS) in Houston, where the Astros have been waiting since finishing their sweep of the Mariners on Saturday. This season, the Yankees went 2-5 against the Astros, dropping all three games in Texas.
The Yankees will open the ALCS by giving Jameson Taillon his first career postseason start. The Astros will roll with soon-to-be three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, who will be making his 33rd career playoff appearance. Verlander, 39, had an MLB-best 1.75 ERA and AL-best 18 wins this season, but he is coming off his worst-ever postseason start — allowing six runs and 10 hits in a no-decision against the Mariners — and hasn’t picked up the win in his past five playoff outings. Verlander allowed one run over seven innings in a win over the Yankees in June. Taillon was pounded for six runs and 10 hits in a no-decision in his lone start against Houston this season.
