These Yankees kind of had no right to win Tuesday night. Their young starter, Elmer Rodríguez, barely survived the top of the first and handed a 3-0 lead to Jacob deGrom, who had allowed four total runs in his previous five starts.

But these days the Yankees are addicted to winning — and it probably helps that it currently feels like there might not be another really good team in the American League.

These Yankees, though, appear special, winning for the 15th time in 17 games Tuesday night because they stuff so many good items into nine innings. One quality at-bat after another. Better defense than they have played in years. Sneakily good relief pitching despite the bad reputation. And they are playing with focus and edge, befitting a team with purpose — plus they might have an avenue to improve further.
