Tonight it begins. May it live far longer.

The Yankees (94-68) and Red Sox (89-73) kick off the latest chapter of baseball’s best rivalry in Tuesday night’s Game 1 of the Wild Card Series in The Bronx, marking the sixth postseason matchup between the teams.

Each game of the best-of-three series will be held at Yankee Stadium, starting with former World Series hero Max Fried (19-5, 2.86 ERA) going against Boston’s Garrett Crochet (18-5, 2.59), who will be making his first postseason start. Fried went 1-1 with a 1.96 ERA against the Red Sox this season. Crochet went 3-0 with a 3.29 ERA in the head-to-head for the Red Sox, who went 5-2 at Yankee Stadium this season.

Though it is the teams’ third playoff battle in seven years — Boston prevailed in 2018 and 2021 — the matchup has struggled in recent years to recreate the intensity of its legendary battles, to add to the iconic moments in the rivalry’s lore.
