NFL: Mangini remains Browns coach
New Browns team president Mike Holmgren decided yesterday to retain head coach Eric Mangini, whose job security was in jeopardy after the Browns started 1-11, for the 2010 season. The Browns finished with a four-game winning streak, Cleveland’s longest since 1994, to help save Mangini.
* Steelers special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky became the second assistant coach fired by coach Mike Tomlin. . . . The Colts will use kicker Matt Stover instead of Adam Vinatieri during this year’s playoffs.
* Players on the two Super Bowl teams who miss the Pro Bowl this year will get paid a full share. Commissioner Roger Goodell has informed the 12 playoff teams that their all-stars who must skip the game because they are preparing for the Super Bowl won’t forfeit Pro Bowl earnings.
NCAA: Snead enters draft
Mississippi QB Jevan Snead will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft. . . . Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is bringing Bob Diaco and Charley Molnar with him from Cincinnati to serve as defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively.
MLB: Bonds’ son faces charges
Barry Bonds’ son was charged with five misdemeanors after he allegedly threw a doorknob at his mother. Nikolai Bonds, 20, faces charges of battery, false imprisonment, vandalism, making threats to an officer and obstructing an officer.
* Adrian Beltre and the Red Sox have finalized a one-year contract that guarantees the third baseman $10 million.
* The Mariners have finalized the trade with the Red Sox that brings first baseman Casey Kotchman to Seattle for outfielder Bill Hall and a player to be named.
* The Athletics have agreed to a $2.65 million, one-year contract for Jack Cust, the Associated Press reported.
* Eric Hinske and the Braves have reached a preliminary agreement on a $1 million, one-year contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.
HOOPS: Terriers beat Red Flash
Akeem Bennett scored 18 points as St. Francis of Brooklyn (4-8, 2-1 NEC) posted a 69-57 win over St. Francis of Loretto (4-10, 2-1). . . . GOLF: Glover leads at Kapalua
U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover carded a 7-under 66 to take a one-shot lead at season-opening SBS Championship in Kapalua, Hawaii. Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy had a 69.
