MLB: Rays sweep at Fenway

B.J. Upton capped a five-run third inning with a three-run homer as the Rays completed a four-game sweep with an 8-2 win victory yesterday in Boston. The Red Sox (4-9) are off to their worst start since opening 1996 at 2-11.

* Doug Fister took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Mariners beat the Orioles, 8-2. Nick Markakis opened the seventh with a clean single to center.

NFL: Sims centerpiece of 3-way trade

The Eagles acquired linebacker Ernie Sims in a three-way deal. Philadelphia dealt a fifth-round pick to the Broncos, who are sending tight end Tony Scheffler and a seventh-round pick to the Lions.

NHL: Bergeron puts Bruins up

In Boston, Patrice Bergeron scored the go-ahead goal with just over six minutes left to give the Bruins a 2-1 win and a 2-1 series lead over Buffalo.

* In Montreal, Alexander Ovechkin scored the fourth goal of Washington’s second-period outburst, leading the Capitals to a 5-1 win over the Canadiens and a 2-1 lead in their series.

* Michal Handzus scored two power-play goals as the Kings chased Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo in a 5-3 victory over the Canucks, taking a 2-1 series lead.

BOSTON MARATHON: Cheruiyot wins

Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot won the 114th Boston Marathon, finishing in 2:05:52 to shatter by 82 seconds the course record set by four-time winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, who is not related. American Ryan Hall, who finished third last year, missed another spot on the podium by 2 seconds, but his time of 2:08:41 was the fastest ever for a U.S. runner in Boston. Ethiopia’s Teyba Erkesso took the women’s title in 2:26:11.

NASCAR: Hamlin prevails in Texas

In Fort Worth, Texas, Denny Hamlin went ahead in the closing 12-lap shootout for a victory at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday, holding off Jimmie Johnson at the end to win a rain-delayed race for the second time in three races.

HOOPS: Jackson OK for Bobcats

The Bobcats said an MRI exam on Stephen Jackson‘s hyperextended left knee shows a small bone bruise but no structural damage. The Bobcats swingman expects to start in Game 2 against the Magic tomorrow night.

* Duke forward Kyle Singler announced he will return to school for his senior season. . . . Washington coach Lorenzo Romar agreed to a new 10-year contract . . . Colorado hired Tad Boyle as its head coach.
