NFL: Raiders file grievance
The Raiders have filed a grievance seeking nearly $10 million back from recently released quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
* Brett Favre’s recent decision to have surgery on his left ankle gave the Vikings more reason to believe he’ll be their quarterback again this season.
* The late Pat Tillman was one of the 14 newly elected members of the College Football Hall of Fame.
* Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown is no longer an official executive advisor for the Browns.
NCAA: UConn assistants resign
A University of Connecticut official tells the Associated Press that assistant coach Patrick Sellers and director of basketball operations Beau Archibald left the men’s basketball program a day before the school plans to hold a news conference to update an NCAA investigation of potential recruiting violations. School officials, including coach Jim Calhoun, were to attend today’s on-campus event.
GOLF: Mickelson eight back
In Forth Worth, Texas, Jason Bohn, Jeff Overton and Blake Adams shot 7-under 63s to share the first-round lead at the Colonial, where 2008 champion Phil Mickelson’s return turned into a struggle after an impressive start. Lefty finished with a 1-over 71 and is tied for 89th place, while 75 players were under par.
* Robin Freeman shot a 6-under 66 for a share of the first-round lead with Berhard Langer At the 71st PGA Senior Championship in Parker, Colo.
ETC.: Guillen not punished . . . yet
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said he hasn’t heard whether he faces punishment for expletive-filled comments about umpire Joe West following his ejection during a game in Cleveland on Wednesday.
* John F. Kennedy basketball standout Jeffrey Short became the latest local to join Fordham, verbally committing to the Atlantic 10 school. He joins former Boys & Girls star Lamount Samuell Jr., who spent a postgraduate year at Notre Dame Prep (Mass.), Bishop Loughlin’s Branden Frazier and Newburgh Free Academy guard Devon (Fatty) McMillan, formerly of Lincoln. — Zach Braziller
