BOXING: Peter wins in unanimous decision
In Hollywood, Fla., Samuel Peter beat James Toney for the second time in three months, getting a unanimous decision in a WBC heavyweight elimination bout and perhaps the chance to fight Oleg Maskaev for a championship.
Peter (28-1, 22 knockouts) was ahead of Toney (69-6-3, 43 KOs) on two cards 118-110. He led the other card 119-108.
NFL: Shoop favorite for Raiders’ job
Raiders offensive coordinator John Shoop has emerged as a strong in-house candidate to succeed Art Shell as the team’s head coach, according to ESPN.com.
Shoop, 37, joins defensive coordinator Rob Ryan as the current Oakland assistants with a chance to fill the vacancy, which was created when Shell was fired on Thursday. One outside candidate who is expected to be interviewed this weekend is Southern California assistant Steve Sarkisian, who was on the Raiders’ staff two weeks ago.
* With an overflow crowd packing the church, the Broncos yesterday filed past the open casket of Darrent Williams, the promising cornerback who was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on New Year’s Day.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was among those at Great Commission Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, not far from where the 24-year-old Williams grew up. More than an hour before the service, the line to get inside the 2,500-seat church stretched around the building.
* Still feeling the effects of turf toe, Ravens’ offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden didn’t practice, but predicted he would play next weekend in the AFC divisional playoff game against the Colts in Baltimore.
TRACK: Garden City junior runs fastest mile
Junior Charles White of Garden City blew away the competition at the 13th Annual Hispanic Games, and the rest of the country, too.
White ran the fastest mile by a high school athlete in the nation this season with a time of 4:15:05 at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in Washington Heights. His performance qualifies him for the 100th Millrose Games at the Garden on Feb. 2. -Howard Kussoy
GOLF: Singh holds third-round lead
Having finished a combined four shots behind Stuart Appleby the last three years, Vijay Singh seized control of the Mercedes-Benz Championship in more blustery conditions in Kapalua, Hawaii, shooting a 3-under 70 to take a three-shot lead over Adam Scott and Trevor Immelman.
TENNIS: Nadal loses in semifinals
In Chennai, India, top-seeded Rafael Nadal lost to Xavier Malisse 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals of the Chennai Open. The 26-year-old Belgian will play in today’s final against Stefan Koubek of Austria.
SKIING: Bode fails to finish
In Adelboden, Switzerland, Olympic champion Benjamin Raich rediscovered his winning touch, capturing a World Cup giant slalom for the first time this season. For Bode Miller, it was more of the same – he failed to finish.
