NFL: ‘Pacman’ gets probation
Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones was sentenced to probation and 200 hours of community service under a plea deal for his role in a 2007 strip club melee in Las Vegas. He also was ordered to receive anger management counseling and undergo random drug testing.
* New Broncos coach John Fox said Kyle Orton, not Tim Tebow, will be his starting quarterback. . . . Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland said Chad Henne is Miami’s starting quarterback, but added he may select a QB in the upcoming draft.
NHL: Kovalev traded to Penguins
The Penguins yesterday acquired former Rangers forward Alex Kovalev in exchange for a conditional draft pick with Ottawa. The trade is Pittsburgh’s second in four days as the team attempts to shore up a banged-up roster that will now be minus 12 regulars. Kovalev, 38, played for the Penguins from 1998-2003.
* The Ducks swapped backup goalies with Tampa Bay, trading struggling Curtis McElhinney to the Lightning for Dan Ellis. . . . The Hurricanes traded forward Ryan Carter and a draft pick to the Panthers for forward Cory Stillman.
GOLF: Toms tied for lead in Mexico
David Toms shot a 5-under 66 to share the first-round lead at the Mayakoba Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Andres Gonzales, Mark Hensby and Kyle Stanley also opened with 66s in windy conditions.
Japan’s Chie Arimura shot a 4-under 68 and took a one-stroke lead over Korea’s Na Yeon Choi at the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore. Natalie Gulbis carded a 71 while Michelle Wie had a 73.
ETC.: Hoyas expect Wright to return
Georgetown expects to have point guard Chris Wright back by the start of the NCAA tournament after he broke his left (non-shooting) hand in the Hoyas’ loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday night.
* Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic remained on course to play for the title by winning quarterfinal matches at the Dubai Championships. Federer, who next plays Richard Gasquet, defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky, 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic, who next faces Tomas Berdych, beat Florian Mayer, 7-5, 6-4.
