Clemens: Wife takes the stand

Debbie Clemens took the stand late yesterday to begin her much-anticipated testimony on behalf of her husband, Roger, at his trial in Washington, but there was only time for her to answer mostly questions about her background before court adjourned for the day.

Today, she is expected to testify she received an HGH shot from Brian McNamee about 12 years ago and that her husband wasn’t present, thus differing with McNamee about the year and circumstances of the injection. Eileen McNamee — subpoenaed by the defense — was on the stand yesterday for a second day, and the government’s cross-examination highlighted discrepancies between her testimony at the trial and what she told the FBI three years ago.

mlb: Bad night for Chapman

Michael McKenry’s RBI double in the 10th inning ruined Aroldis Chapman’s perfect earned run average and rallied the Pirates to a 5-4 victory over the Reds. Chapman (4-1) hadn’t allowed an earned run in a club-record 24 appearances covering 29 innings. He came in to start the 10th with a 0.00 ERA.

Clay Buccholz (6-2) pitched a four-hitter for his third career shutout, leading the Red Sox over the Orioles 7-0.

Fredric Horowitz was hired to replace Shyam Das as the arbitrator for Major League Baseball and its players’ association.

golf: Tiger, Phil paired at Open

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson were paired together for the opening two rounds of next week’s U.S. Open in San Francisco.

Jeff Maggert and John Merrick shot 4-under 66 to share the first-round lead in the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, leaving Rory McIlroy two strokes back.

Beatriz Recari, Giulia Sergas and Ryann O’Toole each shot 3-under 69s to tie for the lead at the Wegmans LPGA Championship in Pittsford, N.Y.

Lee Westwood shot an 8-under 64 to lead by three strokes after the second round at the Nordea Masters in Bro, Sweden.

Dan Forsman and Bill Glasson shared the first-round lead in the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Ala., shooting 6-under 66 at Shoal Creek in the second of the Champions Tour’s five major championships.

The biennial Curtis Cup competition between the U.S. and Britain/Ireland begins today in Nairn, Scotland.

St. John’s junior Ryan McCormick won the New Jersey Amateur by five shots at Baltusrol. The victory came just three days after his dad, Mark, qualified for the U.S. Open.

NFL: Davis admits he’s gay

Wade Davis, a cornerback who spent four preseasons with three NFL teams and also played in NFL Europe, has come out as gay. Davis played in college at Weber State and spent the 2000 and 2002 NFL preseasons with the Titans. He said he didn’t tell his teammates he was gay because he feared the impact it would have in the locker room. Davis is now a staff member at the Hetrick-Martin Institute in New York, which serves gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.

The Patriots released receiver Chad Ochocinco . . . The Saints reportedly made a new contract offer to QB Drew Brees.
