NFL: Funeral held for Reid’s son’s son

Commissioner Roger Goodell, Browns President Mike Holmgren and Patriots coach Bill Belichick were among more than 900 people who packed a Mormon church in Pennsylvania for the funeral service of Garrett Reid, son of Eagles coach Andy Reid.

Garrett Reid was found dead in his dorm room Sunday morning at Lehigh University, where he was assisting the Eagles’ strength and conditioning coach during training camp. The 29-year-old recovering drug addict had seemingly turned his life around. Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say an investigation into Reid’s death could take weeks to wind up. Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli told The (Easton) Express-Times that an autopsy has been done on the body of the 29-year-old Garrett Reid, but officials are awaiting the results of toxicology screening.

Many current and former players, coaches and other league officials traveled from all across the country to pay their respects yesterday morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The list included Ravens coach John Harbaugh, Saints interim coach Joe Vitt and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson and Browns general manager Tom Heckert.

Changes to the NFL’s kickoff rules appear to account for a slight decline in the number of concussions reported across the league last season, according to a new study of injury data provided by the NFL Players Association.

Jesse David, senior vice president at Edgeworth Economics, tells tThe Associated Press that the number of concussions reported on kickoffs decreased by about 43 percent from 2010 to 2011.

Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil won’t be charged in a road rage incident in Miami Beach. His lawyer said the Miami-Dade County state’s attorney informed him yesterday that Dumervil had been cleared in the case. Dumervil had been arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A relieved Dumervil said he knew he “didn’t do anything wrong” but was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“I’m just ready to continue my life,” he said.

The police report said Dumervil and another man were stuck in traffic on July 14, got into an argument with a female driver, and the two men displayed weapons. Dumervil told police he didn’t have a gun; officers say they found one in the car’s glove compartment.

NBA: Former All-Star drowns

Dan Roundfield, an NBA veteran who had three consecutive All-Star seasons, has drowned off the Caribbean island of Aruba while helping his wife as she struggled in rough water. He was 59.

Roundfield, who played 11 professional seasons with Indiana, Atlanta, Detroit and Washington, had been swimming with his wife, Bernie, off the southeastern tip of Aruba on Monday when they became caught in rough water beyond a protected reef area, said John Larmonie, a police spokesman on the southern Caribbean island.

The former All Star was apparently swept away in a strong current as he tried to help his struggling wife, Larmonie said. Police, firefighters, the Coast Guard and volunteers searched for him, finding his body about 90 minutes later, trapped by rocks underwater.

NHL: Labor talks to continue

Donald Fehr, head of the NHLPA, will return to the NHL meetings today after spending time in Europe consulting with European players.

Fehr and the players have not submitted a counter-proposal to the NHL’s original proposal last month. While the two sides have very different ideas on revenue sharing, yesterday’s meetings centered around player safety.

A former Boston University hockey player and 2008 Islanders draft pick has pleaded guilty to assault after prosecutors say he groped a woman in a school dorm last year. Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said Corey Trivino of Toronto pleaded guilty yesterday to two assault charges and trespassing as his trial was about to begin.

Authorities said Trivino forced his way into a resident advisor’s room in December and assaulted the 23-year-old after she asked him and others to observe mandatory quiet hours.

New York Rangers prospects JT Miller, Brady Skjei and Steven Fogarty have been selected for Team USA’’s final 34-man roster for its 2012 National Junior Evaluation Camp. They will now take part in a series of international games this week against Sweden and Finland in Lake Placid to compete for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia.

ETC.: Penn St. gets new unis

Penn State is adding the names of players as well as a symbol of child-abuse awareness to the football team’s jerseys for the upcoming season. The university announced the changes yesterday, saying they will take effect with the Sept. 1 season opener against Ohio University.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has urged cycling’s governing body to support United States anti-doping officials and provide documents to help their case against Lance Armstrong. WADA said it wrote to International Cycling Union President Pat McQuaid, asking him to withdraw a request to take jurisdiction of the Armstrong case from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
