NFL: McNabb impressive in return
In Philadelphia, playing his first game since tearing a knee ligament last November, Donovan McNabb completed 6 of 9 passes for 138 yards, including a 58-yard strike to TE Matt Schobel in the Eagles 27-10 victory over the Panthers in a preseason game last night.
BASEBALL: Cubs sign Zambrano
The Cubs and RHP Carlos Zambrano agreed to a five-year, $91.5M contract extension.
* Orioles closer Chris Ray is expected to miss the entire 2008 season after having major surgery on his right elbow.
GOLF: Wie misses cut
In Edmonton, Alberta, Juli Inkster shot a 5-under 66 for a share of the second-round lead in the Canadian Women’s Open, while Michelle Wie had a 74 to miss the cut. Inkster matched Shi Hyun Ahn (67) at 8-under 134 on the Royal Mayfair course.
* In Greensboro, N.C. Jeff Overton shot a 5-under 67 to move to 12-under 132 and share the lead with Steve Marino (67) and John Huston (66) after the second round of the Wyndham Championship.
HOOPS: Liberty tied for playoff spot
Cathrine Kraayeveld scored 18 points to lead the Liberty to a 74-66 victory over the Connecticut, tying New York with Washington for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The fourth-place Liberty (15-18), who have the tiebreaker over the Mystics, host last-place Chicago tomorrow, while Washington visits the Sun.
BOXING: Hopkins fined
In Las Vegas, Nevada boxing regulators fined Bernard Hopkins $200,000 for instigating a weigh-in brawl before his July fight with Winky Wright. Hopkins’ fine amounts to 6 percent of the $3 million purse he took away from scoring a unanimous decision over Wright July 20.
NASCAR: Gordon snares sixth pole
In Brooklyn, Mich., four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon captured his series-leading sixth pole of 2007 after having to wait for all the rest of the cars entered in the 3M Performance 400 to make their qualifying runs.
