TOUR De FRANCE: ‘Lux’ leads ’em
Kim Kirchen became the first Luxembourg rider in 50 years to take the yellow jersey in the Tour de France while Riccardo Ricco of Italy sprinted to a mountaintop victory yesterday in the sixth stage. Kirchen claimed the overall lead after Stefan Schumacher fell in the final yards.
BLOTTER: Jags’ Jones busted
Jacksonville WR Matt Jones faces a felony drug charge in his former college town of Fayetteville, Ark., after police say he was inside a car cutting up cocaine with a credit card. He was arrested early yesterday.
* Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged former Rams kicker Tony Zendejas with drugging and raping a female customer of his Pomona (Calif.) sports bar in January.
* Teddy Dupay, who played on Florida’s runner-up team in the 2000 NCAA basketball tournament, was charged with beating and raping a woman last month at a Utah ski resort.
MLB: Mariners cut Sexson
The Mariners finally released slugger Richie Sexson after a slump that lasted for most of two seasons and made him a target of constant booing from frustrated fans in Seattle.
SOCCER: Beckham is MLS star
Los Angeles Galaxy stars David Beckhamand Landon Donovan headlined the roster for the MLS All-Star Game, which will be played July 24 in Toronto against West Ham United.
NBA: Clippers land Davis
The Clippers have signed guard Baron Davis. The free-agent averaged 21.8 points last season with the Warriors, who signed free agent Corey Maggette (22.1 points, Clippers) . . . The Rockets signed free agent Brent Barry to a two-year contract. The 6-foot-7 Barry played 31 games with San Antonio last season.
* Dee Brown was signed to an offer sheet by the Wizards after spending last season in Turkey. The Jazz have seven days to match . . . The Spurs and free agent Roger Mason agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth more than $7M.
* Brad Miller of the Kings was suspended for five games because he violated the league drug program . . . The Bulls’ JamesOn Curry was suspended for one game after he pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and urinating in public.
NHL: Peace with Russia
The NHL reached an agreement with a new Russian league that temporarily ends the threat of players being lured away by big money.
