NFL: Millen fired in Detroit
The Lions yesterday fired Matt Millen as team president. Millen’s teams won a league-low 31 games since he took over in 2001. Detroit’s 0-3 record this season dropped Millen to 31-84 overall, giving the Lions at least 10 more losses than any other NFL team since 2001, one of the worst stretches in league history.
* The 3-month-old son of Tampa Bay kicker Matt Bryant died yesterday. No details were available.
BASEBALL: Feds plot Bonds trial strategy
Federal prosecutors say they will prove personal trainer Greg Anderson supplied Barry Bonds with the steroids that led to a positive test in November 2000, the offseason before the slugger hit a major league record 73 home runs. In a court filing yesterday in San Francisco, prosecutors provided a glimpse of their trial strategy against Bonds, who’s accused of lying to a 2003 grand jury investigating steroids use among elite athletes.
Prosecutors said they have two documents showing Bonds tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2000 and that Anderson supplied the drugs, but they did not give details. Bonds’ trial is scheduled to begin March 2.
* Detroit reliever Todd Jones said he’s retiring at the age of 40. Jones, 4-1 with 18 saves in 21 chances this season, has 319 career saves . . . The Twins edged the White Sox 3-2 last night in Minneapolis to pull within a half-game of Chicago in the AL Central.
GOLF: Tour playoffs continue
Sergio Garcia is the only European Ryder Cup player who will be in the 30-man field at the Tour Championship, which begins today in Atlanta. J.B. Holmes and Boo Weekley are the only U.S. Ryder Cuppers not competing this weekend. Vijay Singh won the first two playoff events and only needs to complete four rounds this weekend to win the FedEx Cup.
* New Yorker George Zahringer III and Buddy Marucci advanced to the final of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship yesterday in Fort Worth, Texas . . . Colin Amaral of Metropolis shot a 4-under 68 to take a five-shot lead after two rounds of the Lincoln Met PGA Championship at Glen Oaks in Westbury, L.I.
HOOPS: Bilbo picks Hofstra
Hofstra got a commitment yesterday from St. Dominic’s (L.I.) 6-7 forward Paul Bilbo. The senior chose Hofstra over Manhattan and Colgate.
