MLB: Phillies extend Manuel’s contract
Two months after winning the World Series, the Phillies extended manager Charlie Manuel‘s contract through 2011.
* The Dodgers reportedly reached agreements with free-agent infielders Casey Blake (three years) and Mark Loretta (one year) pending physicals.
* The Orioles traded catcher Ramon Hernandez and cash to the Reds for outfielder Ryan Freel and a pair of minor-league infielders.
* Tony Kubek, an All-Star shortstop who became a fixture on NBC’s “Game of the Week” telecasts for more than two decades, was honored with the Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting.
NFL: Jones’ 3-game ban stands
The NFL upheld Jaguar receiver Matt Jones‘ three-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, meaning Jones will sit out the final three games without pay.
* Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the league is cutting more than 10 percent of its staff, or about 150 jobs.
* Redskin running back Clinton Portis criticized rookie coach Jim Zorn in a weekly radio appearance.
* The Jets waived running back Marcus Mason. Mason was signed Oct. 29 off of the Ravens’ practice squad, but was never active for a game with the Jets. -Brian Costello

In Newark, Seton Hall survived a scare from California Baptist, grinding out a 92-80 win. Jeremy Hazell and Eugene Harvey each scored 25 points for the Pirates (7-1). . . . In Muncie, Ind., Robbie Hummel scored 15 points as No. 14 Purdue defeated Ball State 68-39. . . . In Albany, Alex Franklin scored a season-high 22 points to lead Siena to a 77-60 victory over Marist. . . . John Gooden‘s rebound basket with 1.2 seconds remaining gave St. Francis of Brooklyn a 59-57 victory over visiting Columbia.
* Mike Locksley agreed to a six-year contract worth $750K per to become the football coach at New Mexico.
ETC.: McDyess rejoins Pistons
Antonio McDyess re-signed with the Pistons a month after being dealt to Denver in the Allen Iverson trade.
* In the WNBA draft lottery, the Liberty drew the eighth pick in April’s draft.
* Spanish golf great Seve Ballesteros was released from his Madrid hospital, more than two months after undergoing brain surgery to remove a malignant tumor.
