MLB: Heilman shipped to Cubs
Former Mets reliever Aaron Heilman was traded to the Cubs yesterday for infielder Ronny Cedeno and left-hander Garrett Olson, ending his one-month stay with the Mariners.
* Free agent right-hander Jon Garland, 29, and the Diamondbacks reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract that will pay the former White Sox and Angels hurler about $6.25 million this year. . . . David Weathers and the Reds agreed to a one-year contract worth at least $3.9 million.
GOLF: ‘Enclosed’ hole at FBR
The FBR Open kicks off today at TPC Scottsdale, which features a par-3, 162-yard 16th hole that has been fully enclosed with grandstands seating up to 20,000 spectators.
* Colin Montgomerie was appointed European Ryder Cup captain.
ETC.: Report: Raiders to name Cable coach
Tom Cable, who became interim coach on Sept. 30 after Lane Kiffin was fired, will be the Raiders head coach for the 2009 season, a source close to another candidate for the job told ESPN.com.
* Dallas police have suspended their investigation of former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin‘s report that a man flashed a gun at him at a stoplight. Investigators said they have hit a dead end because Irvin never returned their calls.
* Bobby Bowden signed a one-year contract to coach a 34th season at Florida State.
* The Red Wings signed forward Henrik Zetterberg to a 12-year, $73 million deal.
* Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton formally agreed to fight for Hatton’s 140-pound title on May 2, ending several weeks of negotiating and posturing.
* David Beckham is considering remaining with AC Milan in Italy after his two-month loan from the L.A. Galaxy expires.
