NHL: Therrien fired in Pittsburgh
The Penguins fired coach Michel Therrien yesterday, less than a year after he led the team to the Stanley Cup finals. Dan Bylsma, coach of the team’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, was installed as interim coach with 25 games remaining in the season.
TENNIS: Murray beats Nadal
Second-seeded Andy Murray overcame an injured Rafael Nadal 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to become the first British winner at the ABN Amro tournament yesterday in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The top-ranked Nadal was bothered by a right knee injury.
* Amelie Mauresmo of France outlasted Elena Dementieva of Russia 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-4 in the final of the Open GDF Suez fin Paris. . . . Fourth-seeded Radek Stepanek won his second ATP title this year, rallying to beat fifth seed Mardy Fish 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif.
NFL: Bills’ Lynch arrested
Buffalo RB Marshawn Lynch was arrested in Southern California on a weapons charge. Police said Lynch was arrested Wednesday after officers approached him and two other men sitting in a 2006 Mercedes-Benz in Culver City and found a loaded firearm. In June, Lynch pleaded guilty to a traffic violation and admitted speeding off in his Porsche Cayenne SUV after striking a female pedestrian near Buffalo’s downtown bar district on May 31.
MLB: Phils sign Cairo
Utilityman Miguel Cairo signed a minor league contract with the Phillies yesterday and will get a chance to earn a roster spot in spring training. He spent last year with the Mariners, hitting .249 with 23 RBIs in 221 at-bats.
* Ivan Rodriguez, still a free agent, said he might sign with the Marlins, Astros or Mets. The 14-time All-Star said “only God knows” if he is on the list of 104 players who tested positive for steroids during baseball’s 2003 survey.
HOOPS: Curry day to day
Davidson star Stephen Curry‘s injured left ankle is not broken, and the nation’s leading scorer is listed as day-to-day. The 6-3 junior stepped on the foot of a Furman player during the second half of Saturday’s 75-60 victory. No determination has been made on his status for Wednesday’s game against The Citadel.
SOCCER: Beckham hurts hammy
David Beckham hurt his hamstring in AC Milan’s 2-1 loss to Inter Milan yesterday. The English superstar, on loan to AC Milan through March 9, played 56 minutes before being replaced.
