Mike Anderson has found his assistant coach with local recruiting ties. On Friday the new St. John’s coach offered the job to Queens native Van Macon, who accepted it, a source confirmed. An official announcement wasn’t expected on Friday.
The experienced Macon comes to St. John’s after three years at St. Louis, the last one as an associate head coach. He has also served as an assistant coach at Fordham, Rutgers and Hofstra, working under Mike Rice and Tom Pecora, and is a respected coach in local high school and AAU circles.
Andrew Slater, a national recruiting analyst, was the first to report the news.
It’s an important hire for Anderson, who has never before coached in the northeast and is looking to establish connections in the area. With that in mind, he visited Queens powerhouse Christ the King on Thursday.
Macon, part of the Nassau Community College Athletics Hall of Fame for his exploits as a player, and Anderson spoke on several occasions about the opening, a source said. Anderson has been patient in his approach, speaking to many different assistant coaches with New York City ties and local AAU and head coaches.
Anderson still has one assistant-coaching opening to fill. He brought associate head coach TJ Cleveland with him from Arkansas, and it is uncertain if he will look to add another coach with local connections now that Macon is on board, or seek someone who can recruit on a national level instead.
