Tony Stewart won’t race in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway, he announced Thursday on Twitter.
This is the third consecutive race Stewart has skipped after he hit and killed 20-year-old sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr. on Saturday night in Canandaigua, NY.
News of Stewart dropping out of the Michigan race came on the day of Ward’s funeral.
On Sunday, Jeff Burton will drive the No. 14 car in lieu of Stewart.
“This driver change pertains only to Michigan. Stewart’s plans for upcoming Sprint Cup races have yet to be determined,” Stewart’s team said in a statement.
Stewart hasn’t been criminally charged, and the fatal accident remains under investigation.
