Stony Brook’s Tommy Brenton, LIU Brooklyn’s Jamal Olasewere and Iona’s Lamont “Momo” Jones have been named three of the 25 finalists for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, given to the country’s top player from a mid-major conference.

Brenton, a senior from Maryland, has led the Seawolves to its best season ever since joining Division I in 1999, averaging 8.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.6 steals, helping Stony Brook (21-6, 12-2) to its second straight America East regular season title and third in the past four years. Brenton joined the program after it had posted one winning season in its first nine years in Division I and has become the school’s all-time leader in rebounds and steals, is first in assists since the school made the leap to Division I and was the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year last season.

Olasewere, also from Maryland, had already led the Blackbirds to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, but may have been even more impressive this season, carrying the frontcourt in the absence of reigning conference player of the year Julian Boyd, who was lost for the season to an ACL injury. Olasewere, a First-Team All-Conference selection last season, leads LIU (15-13, 10-6) with 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks and is one of only four active players in the nation with at least 1,700 career points and 900 rebounds.

Jones, the Harlem native who transferred from Arizona after an Elite Eight appearance with the Wildcats, has kept the Gaels offense as explosive as ever despite the losses of Scott Machado and Mike Glover from last year’s NCAA tournament team. Jones is second in the nation with 23 points per game, but Iona (15-13, 9-7) has lost six of their past seven games, coming by a combined 11 points.
