Whatever happens over the rest of his baseball career, Vin Aiello probably will never forget his first varsity start.
Pressed into duty in the opener of Tottenville’s best-of-three PSAL Class A semifinal series, the closer was brilliant in the third-seeded Pirates’ commanding 8-3 win over No. 2 Grand Street Campus. Over 6 2/3 impressive innings, the hard-throwing junior right-hander scattered seven hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.
“We thought Vinny gave us the best option to win,” Tottenville coach Tom Tierney Jr. said. “[He] has done a great job in pressure situations.”
Tottenville (21-1), the defending city champion, is now one win short of returning to the final. Game 2 is tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at MCU Park in Coney Island.
A nervous Aiello allowed two first-inning runs.
“I felt like I was shaking,” he said. “It was definitely nerve-wracking.”
Tottenville’s bats awoke with eight runs in the final three frames.
➤ In the CHSAA Class AA tournament at Kaiser Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University, top seed Xaverian A seemingly safe four-run held off No. 5 Archbishop Molloy, 6-4.
The Clippers (19-2) will take on No. 3 Iona Prep in the winners bracket Sunday to the championship game. Archbishop Molloy (16-5) meets No. 7 Xavier in an elimination game Sunday at Iona Prep.
No. 4 All Hallows beat St. Francis Prep 3-1 to advance to meet No. 2 Monsignor Farrell in an elimination game Sunday at St. John’s.
