After jumping out to an 11-0 lead in the second inning, Monroe head coach Mike Turo decided to give his little-used bench players a chance to get onto the field.

“It will be a while before I do that again,” Turo said.

The Eagles’ subs coughed up the lead and the team found itself trailing, 17-14, before the starters were returned. After the Eagles scored three runs in the sixth, Victor Aracena singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to help salvage an18-17 victory.

Monroe (20-0) advanced to today’s championship round of the Monroe Holiday Tournament at the American Legion Fields in Brooklyn, where it will face Clinton, 7-6 winner over Tottenville.

Gil Garcia led the Governors with a pair of homers. Clinton will have to beat Monroe twice in the double-elimination tourney.
